For a tranquil escape, the Lakeview Terrace Resort at Lewiston Lake in Trinity County, about an hour west of Redding, is a quiet, low-key resort offering comfortable housekeeping cabins. (There is also a small RV park a good distance from the cabins.) Amenities include a heated outdoor pool, horseshoe pits, children's play area and hiking.

Lewiston Lake is famous for its trout fishing, but the limitation on large motor boats makes it prime for kayaking, canoeing and enjoying the quiet. Boats are available for rent at the resort. As we paddled up the lake, we saw osprey, bald eagles and herons.

Owners Roger and Julie Vanderwall are friendly and helpful, while allowing vacationers to enjoy their time to themselves.

The town of Weaverville, about 30 minutes away, has dining, the famous Joss House museum and headquarters for Trinity River rafting and sports activities.

Beginning in September, one-bedroom cabins rent for $60 a night; three- bedroom cabins are $100.
